The Library's AI assistants
Get help finding, understanding and exploring professional knowledge with the library's AI assistants
The library's AI assistants can help you research and understand a topic, find relevant literature and explore research-based knowledge.
They differ from generative AI models such as Copilot and ChatGPT by starting in specific databases and collections of material. You therefore get both an answer and references to the sources on which the answer is based.
This makes it easier to assess the information, and work further with the material.
On this page you can get an overview of the difference between AI assistants, AI models, databases and search engines. You can also find the AI assistant that best suits your needs.
Remember to check all AI generated answers
An answer from an AI model or an AI assistant is not in itself a source that you should trust uncritically. It is the sources on which the AI answer is based that you should investigate and assess.
Among other things, look at whether the sources are based on recognized expertise or authority. This could be, for example, a book, an article or a public website.
Therefore, use the references actively and assess whether the sources are relevant and credible in relation to the question you have asked the AI model or an AI assistant.
Different tools for different needs
There is a difference between searching for information, using a database, and asking questions of an AI model or AI assistant.
The tools work in different ways and each has its own strengths. Some help you find existing information, while others generate answers based on a specific set of sourcematerials.
-
Search Engines
- For example. Google, Bing etc.
- Does not search the internet, but searches its own index built via its own Crawlers.
- Does not provide answers, but links with possible answers.
- The source material is quiet varried in quality, some can bed good some can be rubbish.
-
AI Language Models
- For example. Copilot, ChatGPT etc.
- They do not recover knowledge, but create new knowledge based on probability.
- Knowledge that is not necessarily right or wrong, but gives the most likely answer based on the amount of text that the language model is trained on.
- The source material is quiet varried in quality, some can bed good some can be rubbish.
-
Databases
- For example. Cinahl, PubMed, etc.
- Retrieves content or articles based on information such as title, author names, year, subject words, etc.
- Typically covers one or more related subject areas and contains material within these topics.
- The content is selected according to professional criteria and follows certain quality requirements.
-
AI assistents
- For example. Primo AI, Scopus AI, etc.
- The AI assistants do not rediscover knowledge, but create new knowledge
- The answers are based on content from library systems and databases, such as books, e-books and research articles, and are accompanied by source references.
- The source basis can vary from AI assistant to AI assistant, but is often based on professionally assessed research.
